Liability insurance is a basic insurance requirement for most businesses. As a riding school or equestrian business, there may be an increased risk of injury. If your riding establishment is licensed for the hire of horses for riding lessons or has employees, it’s a legal requirement to hold the relevant valid Liabilities insurance policies.
In addition, it’s thought of as best practice to have PL cover in place for all equine businesses. It’s your responsibility as a business owner to ensure you’re protecting yourself and those on your property.
Within this article, Rachel Kayser from the Ravenhall Rural team will tell you a bit more about liability insurance for your equine business.
Liability Insurance
What is Business Liability Insurance?
Liability insurance is a type of coverage that helps to provide financial protection to a business in the event it is sued or held legally liable for damages arising from bodily injury or property damage caused to others as a result of the business’s operations, products, or services. There are often several policies a business may need to consider.
For any equestrian business, there are several policies that you need to know about. These may include:
- Public Liability including Care Custody & Control Extension
- Products Liability
- Employer’s Liability
- Buildings Cover including Business interruption.
- Rural Fleet Cover
- Hire and Reward (transportation)
- Professional Indemnity
- Management Liability
- Cyber insurance
- Property Owners Liability
- Landowners Liability
- Horsebox insurance including breakdown and uninsurance Loss recovery
Our job at Ravenhall Rural is to understand which policies are essential and most suitable and ensure that the solution(s) offered suit the business and offer the most suitable protection.
Business Protection
Ravenhall Rural’s Equestrian Business Protection
Our Rural team supports equestrian businesses across the UK with crucial, comprehensive insurance. As one of only a few Rural specialist insurance brokers, our products are designed to meet the needs of businesses in this sector. Ranging from Horse and Rider cover to Business Liability, our Rural team are on hand to support the needs of equestrian professionals. Each Ravenhall Rural policy is tailor-made to meet the needs of individual entities.
Equestrian Business Liability
We are keen to ensure that equestrian business proprietors can run their businesses without the restraints of endorsements and warranties on insurance contracts restricting what they can do, and when. Health and Safety is the cornerstone of good management in the equestrian sector, and we reward good quality management with the appropriate cover and premiums. With a minimum £2m limit for public liability, care custody and control as standard and a more flexible policy to meet the business’s needs, Ravenhall Rural offer inclusive Equestrian Business Liability.
Equestrian Business Property
Ravenhall Rural’s Equestrian Business Property Insurance is specifically designed with equestrian businesses in mind. We understand that Equestrian Businesses are not Farms and we don’t believe they should be insured as such either.
Equestrian Yards have different needs and present different risks from an insurance perspective.
As such the Ravenhall Equestrian property product is tailored to the needs of the equestrian yard sector, thereby ensuring appropriate insurance protection is in place.
We also offer Business Interruption cover which can help provide cover for equestrian notifiable diseases such as Strangles.
Going the extra mile
Once we have established your needs for the most essential policies, we will continue to make recommendations based on your unique situation. For example, if you employ staff or travel between different locations, are reliant on taking payments online etc. Our team will recommend the most appropriate solutions that offer the correct level of protection.
Key points and useful information
- For riding schools it’s a legal requirement to hold valid, appropriate Public Liability Insurance. Anything that requires a licence requires insurance, so you need to make sure you’re protected
- Council licensing can vary, depending on where you are geographically. The process to apply for a license can be intense, but it is required
- For any business that employs employees, it’s also a legal requirement to have Employer’s Liability Insurance
Some key features that were included when we developed Ravenhall Rural’s liability scheme include:
- No minimum rider age (you can set your own age restrictions as you see fit)
- A range of PL limits from £2m – £10m
- CCC (Care, Custody and Control) included as standard (£10,000 per horse, £100,000 in aggregate limit)
- Can include up to 5 external shows free of charge and internal shows unlimited free of charge
- Volunteers are covered under the Employers Liability (EL) section. We have worked closely with insurers to ensure that the definition of employee includes volunteers, as this can be a great help for many businesses. It’s a common area that we support
The EL section also includes family members if they are employed by the business.
